Learn standard wall plate dimensions for light switches and outlets, plus tips for choosing custom metal plates that fit your home's wiring.
Quick answer
Standard wall plates for single switches and outlets measure about 2.75 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, but you should always measure your specific opening before ordering a custom metal plate.
Why size matters for custom metal plates
Custom metal wall plates, like those from JE3 Metal Works, are designed to fit standard electrical boxes, but slight variations in wall texture or box depth can affect fit. Measuring ensures the plate covers the opening completely and sits flush against the wall.
Most residential switches and outlets use a standard single-gang box, which accepts plates about 2.75" x 4.5". For double switches or combination outlets, you'll need a wider plate (around 4.5" x 4.5"). Always confirm the number of gangs before ordering.
Trade-offs with thicker metal plates
18-gauge steel plates (like those used in JE3's designs) are durable and reversible, but they are slightly thicker than plastic plates. This can make screw alignment more critical. The included hardware works with standard boxes, but if your box is recessed deeper than 1/4 inch, you may need longer screws.
The powder coat finish adds a protective layer that resists scratches, but it can chip if overtightened. Hand-tighten screws until the plate is snug, then back off a quarter turn to avoid stress on the finish.
How to choose the right wall plate size in 4 steps
- Identify the number of gangs: Look at your existing switch or outlet. A single switch or outlet uses a 1-gang plate. Two switches side by side need a 2-gang plate (about 4.5" wide). Three switches require a 3-gang plate (about 6.5" wide). A common mistake is ordering a 1-gang plate for a 2-gang box. Count the openings before you measure.
- Measure the width and height of the opening: Use a ruler to measure the rough opening in the wall (the hole where the electrical box sits). Standard 1-gang openings are about 2.25" wide by 3.75" tall. The plate should overlap this by at least 1/4 inch on each side. If your opening is slightly larger than standard, a custom plate may still work if the plate's screw holes align with the box's screw holes.
- Check the box depth and screw hole spacing: Measure how deep the electrical box sits from the wall surface. Standard boxes are about 1/2 inch deep. The screw holes on the box should be spaced 3.25 inches apart for 1-gang plates. If your box is recessed, you may need longer screws (not always included). Most metal plates come with screws that work for standard boxes. If your box is deeper than 1/2 inch, buy longer #6-32 screws separately.
- Test fit before final tightening: Place the plate over the box and insert the screws loosely. Check that the plate covers the opening completely and sits flush against the wall. Tighten screws evenly, alternating sides, until snug. Do not overtighten. Overtightening can crack the powder coat finish. Stop turning as soon as the plate stops moving.
Products that fit standard wall plates
- Boer Goat Wall Plate: This wall plate is fabricated from 18-gauge steel with a powder coat finish, and it is reversible for either side facing out. The reversible design means you can choose which side shows the artwork, and the steel thickness ensures it covers standard wall openings without flexing.

Boer Goat Wall Plate - Bear & Cabin Wall Plate: This wall plate is made from 18-gauge steel with a powder coat finish, and mounting hardware is included. The included hardware fits standard electrical boxes, so you can install it right out of the box without extra trips to the store.
